Ktima Biblia Chora: A Winery Worth the Drive from Thessaloniki

If you are exploring Northern Greece and want to understand what modern Greek wine really looks like, a visit to Ktima Biblia Chora is absolutely worth it.

Located near Kavala, in the region of Eastern Macedonia, the winery sits at the foothills of Mount Pangeo — about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Thessaloniki. The drive itself is part of the experience. You leave the city behind, and the landscape slowly opens up into vineyards, mountains, and views toward the Aegean.

This is where you start to understand that Northern Greece is not just a destination — it’s a wine region with its own identity.

The Region: Why Kavala and Mount Pangeo Matter

The area around Kavala and Mount Pangeo is one of the most interesting wine regions in Greece.

What makes it special is the combination of:

  • low-altitude plains near the coast
  • mountain influence from Pangeo and Lekanis
  • proximity to the sea without being fully exposed to it

This creates a very unique mesoclimate.

The vineyards get:

  • plenty of sunshine from south-facing slopes
  • protection from cold northern winds
  • enough warmth to fully ripen the grapes

At the same time, the latitude (around 41°) keeps a certain freshness that you don’t always find further south in Greece.

The result?
Wines with ripe fruit, brightness, and balance — something that stands out compared to other parts of Macedonia.

A Modern Wine Region Still Evolving

Unlike other regions in Greece, Kavala doesn’t rely heavily on one historic local grape.

Instead, what you see here is something different:

  • a mix of international varieties
  • selected Greek grapes like Assyrtiko and Roditis
  • and a strong focus on quality-driven production

Most wineries here are relatively new — many established after the late 1990s — which makes the region feel fresh, dynamic, and still evolving.

And this is exactly where Biblia Chora comes in.

The Story Behind Biblia Chora

Founded in 2001, Ktima Biblia Chora quickly became one of the most talked-about wineries in Greece.

And that’s not by accident.

It is the collaboration of two major figures in Greek wine:

  • Evangelos Gerovassiliou
  • Vassilis Tsaktsarlis

Both already had successful careers before creating Biblia Chora.

The idea was clear:
To build something modern, precise, and expressive — a winery that represents both the region and the future of Greek wine.

A Vision You Can Feel

From the moment you arrive, you understand that this place is built with intention.

Everything feels connected:

  • the vineyards
  • the architecture
  • the flow of the space

One detail that stood out to me personally was right at the entrance.

They have created a small vineyard section with different Greek grape varieties — almost like a living map of Greek wine. You don’t just hear about the grapes, you actually see them.

And there is something even more interesting.

One of the varieties they work with comes from a vine discovered in a remote location in 2002 — a grape that has still not been fully identified.

That alone tells you everything about Greek wine:
There is still so much to discover.

The Experience

What made the visit stand out immediately was the people.

The tour was done in fluent English, and the team truly made the difference. The women who guided us were knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely open to conversation.

We were guided through:

  • the vineyards
  • the production areas
  • every stage of winemaking — from grape to bottle

It didn’t feel like a simple tasting.

It felt like understanding the full life of the wine.

The Wines: Clean, Modern, and Structured

Biblia Chora follows a very modern winemaking style:

  • clean
  • precise
  • expressive

But what makes it interesting is the balance.

The wines are approachable, but they still have depth.

Some highlights:

  • Biblia Chora White: Sauvignon Blanc with Assyrtiko — fresh but structured
  • Biblia Chora Rosé: made from Syrah, with more body than expected
  • Biblia Chora Red: Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot, aged in French oak — rich but balanced

Then you move to the higher-end wines:

  • Ovilos White: Assyrtiko & Semillon, aged in oak — complex and elegant
  • Ovilos Red: Cabernet Sauvignon — considered one of the top examples in Greece

And one of the most fascinating projects:

  • Biblinos wines: made from that unidentified grape variety — a story as interesting as the wine itself

More Than Wine: The Impact on the Region

What stayed with me even more is something we don’t always think about.

A winery like Biblia Chora is not only about producing wine.

It plays an important role in the region.

It:

  • creates jobs
  • supports the local economy
  • brings visitors to an area many people would otherwise overlook

And slowly, through places like this, regions like Kavala become destinations.

Why This Stop Matters on a Northern Greece Road Trip

If you are planning a road trip from Thessaloniki toward Kavala, Drama, or even further east, this stop is not just about wine.

It’s a moment to:

  • slow down
  • understand the region
  • connect with the landscape

This is not a rushed visit.

It’s a pause.

And honestly, it’s one of those places that makes you realize that Greece is not only islands and summer.

There is a whole other side — quieter, evolving, and deeply connected to the land.
