If you are driving between Thessaloniki and Athens, there is one stop that feels completely different from the rest of mainland Greece:
Litochoro
A small town built at the foot of Mount Olympus — the mountain of the ancient Greek gods.
And honestly?
Even if you are not hiking Olympus, Litochoro is still worth visiting.
It has something very special:
mountain energy, fresh air, traditional Macedonian architecture, and at the same time, the sea only a short drive away.
It feels alive all year round
The Gateway to Mount Olympus
Litochoro is known as the main entrance to Olympus.
This is where:
- hikers start their climb
- climbers prepare for expeditions
- nature lovers come for the forests and rivers
- travelers stop to experience a different side of Greece
And even if you only stay one night, you immediately understand why people love this area.
The scenery changes constantly.
One moment you are drinking coffee in a traditional square, and 20 minutes later you are driving through dense mountain roads with views that feel almost unreal.
Why Olympus Feels Different
For Greeks, Olympus is not just a mountain.
It is mythology, history, and identity together.
According to ancient Greek mythology, this was the home of the Twelve Gods.
And somehow, the landscape still feels dramatic enough to support the story.
The mountain is powerful.
Massive.
Wild.
Sometimes covered in clouds even when the weather below is sunny.
There is a certain atmosphere here that photographs cannot fully explain.
What to See in Veroia
What You Can Do Around Litochoro
Walk Through the Village
The town itself is beautiful and relaxed.
You will find:
- stone houses
- small cafés
- tavernas
- bakeries
- mountain architecture mixed with Macedonian character
It feels local.
Not overly touristy.
Especially outside the peak summer months.
Visit the Enipeas Gorge
One of the easiest ways to experience Olympus without a major hike is the:
Enipeas Gorge
You can walk part of the trail, cross wooden bridges, see waterfalls, and enjoy the river running through the forest.
In spring especially, the area feels incredible
Drive Up Toward Prionia
If you have a car, continue driving higher toward:
Prionia
This is where many hiking routes begin.
Even if you are not climbing Olympus, the drive alone is worth it.
The higher you go, the more dramatic the landscape becomes.
Sea and Mountain Together
One thing many visitors do not realize:
The coast is extremely close.
Within a short drive you can reach beaches near:
- Leptokarya
- Platamonas
- Nei Pori
So in one single day, you can:
- walk on Mount Olympus
- eat in a mountain village
- swim in the sea
Very few places in Greece offer that combination so easily.
My Personal Suggestion
I would absolutely suggest staying overnight if you can.
Many people stop briefly on the way between Athens and Thessaloniki, but the atmosphere changes completely once the day visitors leave.
Morning coffee in Litochoro with Olympus in front of you feels peaceful in a way that is hard to describe.
