If i came to visit you in Chania…. With Maria

Maria has been a friend for years—always kind, always full of life. She’s the kind of person who never misses a chance to return to her beloved hometown of Chania. A proud Cretan, she dances like a true islander, knows exactly where to find the best food, and (yes) can absolutely handle her raki.

When I told her I was going to Chania to do research for my group tour, she just smiled and said,

“Don’t worry, I got you.”

That same night she sent me a full file with her favorite places—sunsets, beaches, bars, tavernas, desserts… everything. It turns out, she’s known for sharing this list with any friend who needs Cretan tips.

So here’s Maria’s Chania. You’re in good hands.

Best Sunset Spot in Chania:

Koukouvagia Café

Maria’s #1 recommendation. High above the city, Koukouvagia Café offers sweeping views of Chania and the sea.

“Time it right. Check sunset time the day before and arrive at least an hour early. Ask for an outdoor table and wait as long as it takes. Trust me.”

The sun dips into the water, and one by one, the lights of the city flicker on. It’s pure Chania magic.

Where to Eat in Chania: Maria’s Favorite Tavernas

Semiramis Taverna

Tucked into the side streets of the Venetian harbor, Semiramis is made for a night out. Live Greek music sets the mood—not loud, just beautifully atmospheric.

“Go at night, ask locals for directions, and order lots of appetizers. That’s where the magic is.”

Mixalis Taverna

Another local gem, packed every night for a reason. Maria recommends:

  • Fried calamari
  • Zucchini fritters (kolokithokeftedes)
  • Cheese croquettes
  • Saganaki (fried cheese)
  • Grilled octopus
  • Greek salad
  • Keftedakia (small meatballs)
  • Garlic spread (skordalia)

“Don’t fill up on bread. You’ll want it later to dip into salad juice and garlic spread!”

The Best Beaches in Chania Elafonissi Beach – Calm, shallow turquoise waters and soft sand. Go early with the KTEL bus from the center.

Balos Beach – A tropical dream. Pinkish sand, crystal-clear water. You’ll need to take a bus + small boat (ask local travel offices for help).

Falassarna Beach – Expansive, golden, and peaceful. A sunset swim here is unforgettable.

Chania Nightlife & Cool Bars

  • Nama – Elegant lounge with mellow music and views of the lighthouse
  • Barraki – Packed, outdoors, with a younger crowd and Greek summer hits
  • Koum Kapi – Late-night drinks above crashing waves, perfect after dinner
  • Cabana Mare – Stylish beach bar with sushi, DJs, and a vibrant scene
  • Neromylos – Poolside bar with music in Platanias—Maria skips the beach, but loves the vibe

Local Beaches to Relax

  • Ammos & Ilios – Volleyball, paddleball, and a lively beach bar scene
  • Agious Apostolous – Clean, calm, and only 10 minutes from the city
  • Marathi & Almirida – Beautiful waters and incredible seafood tavernas
  • Stavros Beach – Crystal water and the filming location of Zorba the Greek

Hidden Gems in Chania

Koumos in Kalives – A quirky stone-built taverna built entirely by one man. Go at night. Take a walk around (don’t miss the bathroom signs), then sit for dinner.

Agora (Chania Municipal Market) – Though under renovation now, it’s normally the go-to spot for local cheeses, honey, olive oil, herbs, and souvenirs.

Local Food You Can’t Miss

  • Staka – Rich sheep’s butter served with fresh bread
  • Sea urchins – Delicate, briny, and truly Cretan
  • Snails sautéed in vinegar and rosemary (chochlioi boubouristoi)
  • Kalitsounia – Mini cheese or sweet pies, often drizzled with honey
  • Best gyros – Thraka, near the harbor
  • Best pizza – Funky Pizzeria (Maria swears by the carbonara slice)
  • Best crepes – Roxani, before you reach the limani
  • Best bougatsa – IORDANI, in the old town square. Go at 6 a.m. fresh from the oven.

Why We’ll Keep Coming Back to Chania

When we were doing research for our Greece Unplugged group tour, we followed many of Maria’s recommendations—and she didn’t miss. Her notes became our unofficial Chania guide: where to go, what to order, when to go.

But one thing truly stayed with us… The bougatsa at IORDANI. Still warm, flaky, creamy, and quietly perfect at sunrise. Honestly, it’s one of the reasons we can’t wait to return.

“Don’t try to do everything. Pick your sunset, your taverna, your beach… and take it slow. That’s how Chania shows her best self.” – Maria
